Established in 1970, the Gold Coast Fishermen's Co-Operative was one of the first developments on the Spit at Main Beach.
For decades trawlers caught and sold their local catch to providers in the seafood industry. In 2005, the Co-Operative sought approval from the Gold Coast City Council Health and began selling their catch direct to the public from the boat at the best possible price.

The Gold Coast Fishermen’s Co-op is a unique, community-focused, not-for-profit organization supporting family-owned fishing businesses. To maintain its high-quality seafood experience for both locals and visitors, the Co-op’s facilities need an update. This Business Visioning report, developed by Griffith University through stakeholder consultations, outlines the Co-op’s current operations, visitor insights, and successful case studies from other seafood precincts. It also presents proposals for enhancing the Co-op's appeal, aligning with strategic goals for the Spit area, including tourism growth, cultural connections, and the promotion of a green peninsula. Prawn Trawling Closure

The Co-op commences the annual 6 week prawn trawling closure on 20th September, this will run until the 1st of November inclusive, during this time the Spanner Crab Fishery will remain open and operating.
Some of our Trawler Operators may be working in New South Wales during the closure, we recommend checking the website prior to coming over to avoid disappointment.
